- a conversation

Tuesday September 27 2011 6-8pm
What is the nature of swarming? How does a hive of bees make decisions collectively? Are there lessons to be learnt for the human race as it heads towards an uncertain future, from insects as small as a bee? What is a superorganism and what models are available for humanity to transcend our individualism and become a global collective?
You are invited to an evening with Ron Breland, beekeeper/philosopher, and Megan Evans, artist, to discuss these issues and ideas and view the exhibition TO bee. Ron will give a brief talk on his method and philosophy of beekeeping, followed by a discussion led by Megan Evans.

There has been a rising interest in bees worldwide, sparked by the dire warnings of their demise. There are many theories as to why bee populations across the world are under threat but no definitive answers.

This year Megan travelled from Australia to meet Ron Breland who makes a special hive in the shape of a dodecahedron. Ron’s ideas about beekeeping related to her work, The Bee Project, in which she looks at bees as a metaphor for social transformation. While in New York, Megan also photographed other rooftop beekeepers and then returned home to make work for the exhibition TO bee.

BoxoFFICE is dedicated to furthering contemporary art from the new frontier. While frontier may conjure a geographic image, it is actually a spirit that lives in many places simultaneously. The artists that BoxoFFICE cooperates with are each singular in their practice. They address a range of subjects, in a variety of media, working freely, boldly and independently. Some are located in places that nurture the open spirit, while others create their own free space within the metropolitan fabric. These artists engage a dialogue concerning freedom, choice and responsibility. And BoxoFFICE is their conduit to a wider audience.
